Although the last deadline for the project was on 28 April, municipal contractors were still busy working on the storm water system at Batswaneng in Khutsong this week. So far, the project has caused several sewage leaks,
disrupted traffic and endangered the lives of children living in the area. Heaps of excavated earth have been
left on the side of the road and on sidewalks and deep holes have been left open in several streets. Now, residents
are furious because the contractors have also damaged the tar road near Sompani Street that was only built a few months ago. As a result of the contractors’ perceived incompetence, none of the street lights is working. When questioned about the lack of progress, the Merafong spokesperson said the contractor had run into difficulties with cash flow and site supervision. However, he assured that the contractor is liable and responsible for all the damages caused either by himself or his subcontractors. ‘The municipality will withhold the completion certification and the retention monies in terms of contractual provisions until all the damages and snags…have been attended to. ‘The electrical section will inspect the site when the project is completed to implement remedial action with regard to the street lights,’ he said on Tuesday.
