SAPS member laid to rest

After 30 years in the police service, the 2IC of the community service department was laid to rest on 8 August.
Members of the SAPS bid their last respects to WO Jacobus Hercules van Niekerk at the NG Kerk in Oberholzer.
The 49-year-old officer from the Carletonville Police Station passed away on 2 August after experiencing shortness of breath. He was on his way to the hospital at the time. The Carletonville station commander, Brig. Marinda Theron described Van Niekerk as a wonderful person to work with. She paid tribute her colleague, who started his police career as a teenager. She said he contributed so much to the station within different departments. ‘It was an honour to work with him… he was a passionate worker who went the extra mile. He was very intelligent, skilled, experienced and knowledgeable,’ she said. His younger sister, Erna de Klerk said he will be missed by his family and friends. She also expressed appreciation for all the support, love and encouragement during the family’s time of loss.
‘It was a privilege to be his brother.I am grateful for what he taught me in the field of life,’ said his elder brother,
Carel. The members of the SAPS marched from the church to the CBD in his honour.
