Local crime thriller being shot in Carletonville

The shooting of the South African crime thriller, ‘Shaft 6’ started at the Carletonville Civic Centre on Monday, 23 October. This film follows two police officers as they investigate the discovery of a corpse in the abandoned mining shaft, Shaft 6. Best Casting Agency has invited members of the community to take part in the movie as extras and, according to the managing director, Dimitri Bailanis, their main objective is to create jobs and enrich people in disadvantaged communities. ‘We also facilitate skills development through workshops,’ he said. The original score was penned by Audio Militia, which is also the executive producer on the project. Kyle Ambrose and Delon Bakker are the other producers and this will be Baker’s directorial debut. In the movie, Paul du Toit stars opposite the popular Vuyo Dabula. The legendary South African actors, Deon Lotz and Jerry Mofokeng also star in the production. ‘Shaft 6’ taps into the Department of Trade and Industry (dti) rebate and is locally supported by several stakeholders, including the National Film and Video Foundation, (NFVF) and M-Net. The film is set in Carletonville in 2006. The small mining town is rocked by the discovery of a corpse in the infamous Shaft 6. Mystery surrounds the motive but another dead miner is a reminder of how little has changed in democracy. The town is on edge and the people want answers. Striking miners barricade the entrance to the mine and refuse to allow anyone to leave the complex before their demands are met. Sergeant Bo Mazibuko, a well respected police officer and team leader in the
Riot Squad, is sent in to diffuse the situation. In the back of his mind, he finds himself being drawn to the case. Detective Heinrich Theron, a rebel with a cause, fights to stay on point in the case. The police captain is concerned about his relationship with the mine boss. Johan Theron, his father, has run the mine for many years, passed down from generation to generation; there would be no town without it. However, when Johan arrives at Bo’s house to call in a personal debt, it becomes apparent the body is set to unravel things both men would prefer to forget. ‘Shaft 6’ is set to be released locally in early 2019.
