The community of Ext. 11 in Ikageng is still reeling in shock after a 46-year-old man murdered his 30-year-old girlfriend and their two sons, aged nine and two, before hanging himself on Monday night.
Forty-one-year old Elisa Sejeso was his neighbour and had known him since 2007. She says the woman’s 13-year-old daughter had woken her up at 07:00 to say he had hanged himself.
‘She was asleep in another bedroom when she heard her mother scream in the middle of the night. But, she said, it soon subsided and she thought her parents were just fighting again. She then heard the two boys crying but, moments later, everything was quiet so she went back to sleep.
‘When she woke up in the morning, she wanted her mother so she knocked on their bedroom door. Her ‘stepfather’ said she had gone to ask the neighbour for taxi fare so the teenager went back to bed. When she later got up to look for her mother, he told her she was still not back.
‘After a few minutes, she returned for the third time and saw his body dangling from the roof. She ran to my house and I called three neighbours who were brave enough to check what had happened. They found the two boys lying on the bed and the mother on the floor next to them,’ she said.
Elisa then alerted the police. She believes the man strangled them all with his bare hands during the night.
‘I knew the man well. He loved gospel music and was quiet when he was sober. However, when he was drunk, all hell broke loose and he became a totally different person.
He would beat her up and accuse her of cheating. She always came running to my house for help. She used to say that her husband gets jealous and goes berserk when she receives calls from male colleagues and friends.
‘I loved the two boys dearly. They would always play with my 2-year-old son in my yard.’
Elisa is devastated and is struggling to come to terms with the incident.
‘I am heartbroken. I cannot sleep at night and I lie on the bed and I am scared. I now listen out for any screams from the neighbours and I am ready to go help. After this, we don’t know what might happen next.’
Elisa says the family was probably murdered while it was raining heavily and that is why no one could hear any screaming. ‘If I had heard the screams that night, I would have gone to help and the family would still be here,’ she said, tormented.
WO Ishmael Mohutsiwa, the Ikageng police spokesperson says the police are investigating three counts of murder and an inquest but the motive for the killing is still unknown. He adds that the daughter is receiving counselling.
The provincial commissioner of North West, Lt-Gen. Baile Motswenyane has expressed her sincere condolences to the family and condemned this act of domestic violence.
‘It is distressing to hear about incidents like this when the country is commemorating 16 Days of Activism against woman and child abuse.
‘I urge members of the community to make use of the services of the professionals available to resolve their disputes,’ she said.
