House fire stopped in the nick of time

Thanks to the quick response by emergency personnel, a house fire in 23rd Avenue in Welverdiend was stopped before major damage occurred on 31 January. The family’s home was saved by three Gladiator Distress Alert employees after a call was received with the news that a fire had broken out in one of the bedrooms. The three emergency medical care workers, two of whom are actually firemen who do extra voluntary work, rushed to the scene of the fire. Two of them, Theuns de Bruyn and Bongani Mothongwane, together with Riaan de Bruyn, got to work immediately. According to Mr Eugene (Pottie) Potgieter, the director of Gladiator, the brave men accessed the room where the fire had started, grabbed a hosepipe and extinguished the flames. ‘These three men stopped an entire house from burning down and, although there is some smoke damage, it’s nothing that soap and water can’t fix,’ added Gerrit Bradnick, the operational manager of Gladiator Distress Alert. The family only lost a bed and not their entire residence. It is suspected that the fire was caused by a possible electrical fault.
