Businessman allegedly murdered by hitmen

Members of The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) protested outside the Fochville District Court on 7 February, when four Sotho men were appearing for a formal bail application. The suspects stand accused of murdering a well-known businessman from Wedela over the festive season. The incident took place in Lengau Street in the township at around 21:00 on Friday, 29 December. The victim, Jackie Matlhalela, worked as a mechanic in the community. A search was conducted for him over the weekend after his family reported him missing. It was stopped when a family member discovered the victim’s body outside the house on 31 December. According to the investigating officer, Const. Thembile Mpambane, the body of the victim had a wound on the neck. ‘The badly decomposed body was found lying in a pool of blood and a cartridge was found on the scene,’ says Mpambane. Weekliks stock herders discovered the abandoned vehicle in an open veld in Ext. 3. Police continued to investigate the case and, on Sunday 28 January, it was revealed that the victim had been shot by the four hitmen. On Monday morning, 29 January, the suspects were arrested after being found at different residential addresses. They then revealed that Matlhalela’s wife had hired them to take him out. She and the alleged hitmen first appeared in the Fochville District court on Wednesday 31 January. The Matlhalela family is said to be devastated by the incident.
