Water account problems upset pensioners

Residents of Khutsong are furious with the municipality for not assisting them with problems with their water bills.
‘The municipality wants us to pay for services but it does not want to sort out problems with our accounts,’ says Mr Cedric Pitlele, the chairman of the Tswelopelo Ward Forum in Batswaneng.
According to him, he has been sending written complaints to the Merafong City Local Municipality about issues at two houses but has, so far, just been ignored.
At No. 2416, the water meter reading stated on the resident’s municipal account is much higher than the reading on the meter itself. At No. 2414, the water meter in the front yard has been leaking for months. Both houses belong to pensioners.
‘There is no monitoring from the side of the municipality and they just don’t respond to our complaints. How can they expect the residents to continue paying for their mistakes?’
Pitlele complains. When the Herald asked the Merafong City Local Municipality about the problems on Tuesday, a municipal spokesperson assured that water meters of the residents in question would be investigated and corrective measures implemented.
