Thembakazi Zweni, a member of the Sibanye-Stillwater marathon club, held the area’s name high when she scooped two awards at the South African Masters’ Athletics competition. The event was held in Bloemfontein on 28 and 29 April.

39-year-old Zweni first showed her speed in the 5 000 m event on the first day. Here, she scooped the bronze medal after winning the third position.

She brought a silver medal home the next day when she came second in the 1 500 m race.
Zweni qualified for the Nationals after winning gold medals at the Gauteng Masters’ Championships in Germiston earlier this year.
There is, however, no stopping Zweni and she is currently preparing for the Comrades marathon on 10 June.
‘I’m already fit and am now just doing touch-ups to make sure I am able to finish,’ she told the Herald.
Her next goal is the Nelson Mandela Marathon in Pietermaritzburg on 28 August. Here, Zweni will take part in the 21,1 km half-marathon.
She trains with her running partner, Thabiso Lemako (31), who originally hails from Qwa-Qwa.
