Athletes excel at big event

The young stars, Oratile Maki, Nthabeleng Mokhele and Paphiwe Khumalo, with their coach, Afika Ndlazi behind them.

Fourteen-year-old Oratile Maki, Nthabeleng Mokhele (15) and Paphiwe Khumalo (14) tested their speed at the Soncini Games held at the Kagiso Sports Complex on 2 October.
Oratile, a learner of Laerskool Danie Theron, won both the 100 m and the 200 m sprints in his age category.
Nthabeleng, from Badirile High School in turn won the u.15 100 m and 200m events, while Paphiwe came second in the sprints over the same distances. The athletes are now proceeding to the provincial competitions of the same event. According to their coach, Afika Ndlazi, the Soncini Games are made special by the fact that, every second year, the national winners get the opportunity to travel overseas. “It is now still early in the season, which means that these athletes will be more than ready when their schools’ athletics seasons start next year,” he told the Herald.
Ndlazi coaches all the athletes on the sports fields of Carletonville High School.
