Several members of the XKT Kickboxing Club from Fochville excelled in a big competition recently.
The Fochville kickboxers took part in the Arnold Sports Festival from 27 to 29 May. This event was first launched in the United States as a professional bodybuilding contest in 1989 but has since expanded into a multi-sport festival, founded by the
legendary body builder and film star, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger
travelled specially to South Africa to attend the annual event, which was held in partnership with the Gauteng provincial government and the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc).
The festival took place at the Sandton Convention Centre and drew more than 10 000 professional and amateur athletes. These participants competed in 47 different sporting codes and events, among others, kickboxing, karate, boxing, Aikido and Muay Tai.
Several of the Fochville kickboxers excelled in their respective categories.
Benjamin Peach won two gold medals for semi- and light- continuous fighting
while Heinrich Schutte also won a gold medal for continuous fighting. Xandrie
Pretorius scooped up two gold medals in the creative weapons form and creative
forms categories while Jaundrè Schutte won gold for full contact fighting.
Other gold medal winners who held the town’s name high were Alfie Kahts (full contact) and Dwayne Putter (full contact).
Marchelle Engelbrecht won a bronze in the semi-contact category and a silver medal for light continuous fighting. Stanley Bennett won silver for continuous fighting and
bronze for semi-contact.
