VIDEO: Protests in Wedela heat up

Residents are advised to avoid the area.

Community members in Wedela continued their protest today (23 August) over a recent deal that is supposed to bring more jobs at mines.

The protests started on Tuesday (21 August). According to Moshe and members of the community with whom the Herald spoke, the protest related to a memorandum of understanding that was recently reached between mines in the area and a group of representatives from all over Merafong, led by the West Rand Sanco (The South African National Civic Organisation) chairman, Mr Lebogang Mangaliso.
According to some of the angry community members with whom the Herald spoke, they were not represented by the group and, as a consequence, would not be able to qualify for these jobs on the mines.
